8 Reliable Resources To Learn About Health System Finance

Once again, a great interview from our friend, David Nordella:

Journalists amuse us sometimes. Consider the following headline on Yahoo. “Twitter rumor leads to sharp increase in the price of oil,” http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/technology-blog/twitter-rumor-leads-sharp-increase-price-oil-173027289.html. The story mentioned that a rumor shared on Twitter corresponded with an increase in the price of oil.

The reporter is using a logical fallacy to create a story. The fallacy is called “correlation proves causation.” The reporter says that A is a fact, B is a fact, and therefore C is a fact. No real connection has been proven between A and B beyond their having a connection in time.

“Correlation proves causation” fallacies are often persuasive, frequently because the news cycle spins so rapidly. Journalists like being perceived as connected and knowledgeable. No resistance to rhetorical absurdity + ego boost for “knowledgeable” writers and readers = common use of bad logic.

Twitter Thursday knows that rumors can move markets. We know that Twitter is a quick way to spread a rumor. We even know that rumors are spread for personal gain in the financial markets.

We suggest that “Twitter helps to predict flu trends in New York” be re-titled to “Twitter causes flu in New York” based on how our friends in the fourth estate are practicing their craft: (http://www.fiercehealthit.com/story/twitter-helps-predict-flu-trends-new-york/2012-08-01?utm_source=rss#ixzz22yFfxYJt).

We just don’t know what is going through the mind (or high-frequency trading programs) of everybody else in the marketplace. Apparently others do. We will just have to live with the shame.
