Choose Your Web Design Typeface Well

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a bad typeface can ruin an entire website design. Typography used to be a fascination of only the few, but now more and more designers and CEOs are jumping on the bandwagon. It has become a vital part of the web design process, and the sooner online companies structure their typeface branding, the better.

Here are a few tips and tricks to finding and harmonizing your website's typeface.

  • Use your logo as a base. Logos are the first impression every company makes with its customers. Before any content is read, the logo is absorbed as the representation of the overall image a site wants to portray. If you're happy with your logo, find a similar or complimenting typeface to use for the rest of your site. If you're not, make adjusting it a priority.
  •

  • Repeat the phrase "web safe fonts" to yourself. Even in 2012, there are sites out there that opt out of utilizing web safe fonts in their site. Finding a text for your site wont mean a thing if the majority of your online viewers see the font as Times New Roman. So remind yourself to only use web safe fonts for every area of the site.
  •

  • Don't overdo it. Finding a unique typeface can bring in new interest to a site, but if it's too unique, it might not be readable to a portion of your viewers. Many blogs and websites spend hours a day uploading new content, just to make it frustratingly baffling to understand to everyone else. Keep the typeface easy to read, but distinct in its subtleties.
  •

  • Above all, keep the brand in mind. One of the biggest reasons typography has been so popular recently is because companies and designers are discovering how much of an impact they make on the memory of a consumer. Most of us can't remember the eye color of some relatives, yet we all can pick out our favorite brand's typeface out of a line up. Leave an impression on your customers and they'll never forget your product.
