Trowl for Targeted Traffic with Tantalizing Text

When composing, tagging, and linking your website’s text and copy, it is important to be selective and strategic if you want to drive serious traffic from search engines like Google and Bing or even the more selective search sites that are more industry specific.

Search engines in general analyze all the text on your site encoded with HTML tags and they monitor whatever text is hyperlinked or tagged. Considering the priority placed on the "anchor text" of your links, don’t waste the opportunity to be noticed with superfluous text, like “click here” or “welcome to my site.”

If you’re going to draw attention to text within your site, do it with your top keywords, making certain that they are spelled correctly and spaced consistently with each use. As well, make sure that you use different variations of your targeted keywords and pull semantically related phrases that make sense with the rest of the content on the page. Search engines love to find related words on a page and that boosts your ranking scores.

By the way, I heard a presentation last week about Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI, which is a fancy way of saying your pages should contain your targeted keyword phrase and contextually related words too) and they said if your page is written well enough with semantically related words, you could literally leave your targeted phrase OFF of the page and Google would still know from the rest of the content on the page what phrase you were targeted. That is some serious mathematics.

Now if you write your links as I am suggesting you get two benefits. Not only are you being straightforward with the way you present information about your business to search engines, you are making it easier for users to find your products or services with a quick scan of your site as opposed to making them click through multiple links and pages.

By example, you can take a rather pedestrian looking e-commerce site with a client-minded design and by using good copy, demonstrate a clear relevance to your industry and the accompanying credibility to gain that lead or earn that sale.

So next time you pick up that wireless keyboard and start to type, earn yourself a high LSI rating and just remember that people shouldn't have to be told to click here - they should be able to figure it out just like the search engines do when your phrase isn't even on the page.

Anyone for a math lesson?
