Twitter and Pinterest

The split up between Twitter and LinkedIn is so last week! A post written by Sarah Peez on Tech Crunch leads us to believe that the break-up might have been caused by outside “interests”, “Pinterest Traffic Passes Google Referrals, Bing, Twitter & StumbleUpon”: http://techcrunch.com/2012/07/09/pinterest-now-beating-google-referral-traffic-plus-bing-twitter-stumbleupon/. It’s sad! These kinds of problem have been popping-up in too many households these days...

Apparently this has been a hot topic for awhile. A Google search for Twitter + Pinterest produced about 230,000,000 results in 0.23 seconds. A Google Trends search for “Twitter and Pinterest” http://www.google.com/trends/?q=twitter+and+pinterest showed no activity for four years with activity then skyrocketing in May 2012. This is not a coincidence.

The fact that Twitter and Pinterest could drive traffic to one another was probably a strategic consideration when building their alliance. Pinterest has extolled the benefit of both platforms to their users in “Going Viral on Pinterest: Driving Big Traffic and Making Pinterest a Real Marketing Solution”

http://www.pinterestarticles.com/2012/04/23/going-viral-on-pinterest-driving-big-traffic-and-making-pinterest-a-real-marketing-solution/. “It was during that month of January that Pinterest exploded from a casual social network to an absolute powerhouse of over 10 million users. By this point, it was driving more referral traffic than Google+, Youtube, and LinkedIn. For a social network remaining under the radar for the marketing industry, these are numbers that can’t be ignored.”

Digitalflashnyc created an infographic called “Battle of the Sexes” that illustrated the synchronicity between Twitter and Pinterest: http://digitalflashnyc.tumblr.com/post/26568349017/check-it-out-digitalflashnycs-infographic-on-the. Twitter and Pinterest users are predominately women. They cross-communicate across both media and spend more time on social media than men. So if you plan to market to women (and you should) then you need to consider using Twitter with Pinterest.

Why should you, as a physician, care about Twitter connecting with Pinterest? Would you ask Willie Sutton about why he robs banks? “That’s where the money is”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYdZ3I2LLZ8. “Women make approximately 80 percent of health care decisions for their families and are more likely to be the care givers when a family member falls ill”, according to the United States Department of Labor: http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/newsroom/fshlth5.html. You need to consider marketing for new patients though Twitter and Pinterest because your healthcare decision-makers are using the two together.

Does LinkedIn, with demographics skewed to males fit in with Twitter and Pinterest? Not so much. So Twitter likely left LinkedIn for money rather than love.

There has been an earthquake in my Inbox! Email titled "Post your Twitter handle here" from Ali Liaquat is rocking the Social Media Marketing group on LinkedIn. “Some of us may share same enthusiasm for any specific topic or industry (e.g. technology, marketing, finance etc). Therefore, it's platform where you can find and follow your preference on twitter.”

This discussion thread was started four 4 months ago. @BeneficentGuild (my Twitter handle) may have been comment number 3,160. A discussion thread with over 3,160 comments over a four month period is monumental for LinkedIn. Apparently not all Tweeple feel like abandoning LinkedIn.
