Twitter Cause: It's good for you

Birds of a feather don’t flock together because they are only interested in themselves. People congregate where they have interests in common. Tweeple (people on Twitter) frequently use Twitter to meet others about common concerns.

Twitter needs no social proof of their ability to influence social causes after the earthquakes in Haiti and Japan. Twitter became part of the news story when the “Arab Spring” emerged. People used Twitter to publicize their interpretation of events and to learn if others were concerned about those events.Communities were spawned on Twitter from common passions for change.

Claire Diaz-Ortiz leads social corporate innovation at Twitter, Inc. Claire was a co-founder of Hope Runs, a non-profit organization that operates AIDS orphanages in Kenya. The school foundation sent her to business school. Claire met Biz Stone, one of the founders of Twitter, at the school. She now works with major corporations and non-governmental organizations to promote corporate philanthropy through Twitter.

Claire is also the author of “Twitter for Good: Change the World One Tweet at a Time.” Claire has a trailer on her web-site. She says in the trailer for her book, “I recommend that every organization of any size, small or large, has a Twitter strategy so that they can get started and try to make a difference on the platform.”

Claire cites Pepsi as a for-profit organization that has used their Twitter account to make the world a better place. Pepsi’s “Refresh” project gave over $20,000,000 in grants to small organizations and individuals. “They really used their Twitter account to really galvanize a movement and get everyone behind it and help people to vote on who should be winning each and every grant.”

Chase Bank and LivingSocial are doing something similar. They are offering up to twelve grants of up to $250,000 to small businesses through their “Mission: Small Business” program. “Small business owners will be required to tell us why their business is unique, outline a proposed plan for utilizing the Grant to grow their business and describe how the business is involved with its community...Each registered small business must receive at least 250 votes to be considered for a Grant. The voting period is open from May 7, 2012 through June 30, 2012.”

LADezign.com wants one of those grants. They plan to use the funds from the grant to hire college interns as a pathway to employment. LADezign.com wants to invest in those who invest in themselves by fostering educational investments that lead to jobs. I believe in helping people that work to improve themselves, just like LADezign.com. Therefore, I am encouraging you to vote for LADezign.com at www.ladezign.com/chaselivingsocial.html.

In the interests of full disclosure, LADezign.com hosts the web-site that publishes this column. Jason Ciment is an Executive Director at LADezign.com. Jason is a personal friend of mine.

Jason has asked me to Tweet on their behalf, which I have done. He did not ask me to write this column and does not pay me to write anything. I write for LADezign.com because:
  •  I like Jason
  • I have a passion for explaining how Independent Practice Associations (small to medium sizedgroups of doctors) can positively impact their financial condition
  • I believe people should help other people in need in a practical manner
You should promote a cause on Twitter that is near to your heart. Promoting a worthy cause on Twitter is good for the people that receive your aid. Supporting a cause on T witter is also good as you will engage prospective patients that believe in the cause, just like you do.

Vote for LADezign.com to receive a grant at www.ladezign.com/chaselivingsocial.html.
