Words Blog 5: Building Your Website Image (Part 2)

Photographs, used intuitively, can improve the look and appeal of your website by adding impact and power. They can also strengthen the immediate impression visitors have of your website and improve the chance that visitors remain there instead of quickly navigating away. Appropriate photographs can also increase the SEO results for your website.

Depending on the image you are building with your website, you may elect to use just a few photos or to rely heavily on them to tell your story. Whichever path you choose, you can increase the effectiveness of how those photos are used in several ways.

A first step is to be sure that any photos selected are consistent with the image you are building on the site. For example, if you are building a conservative professional brand, your photos should reflect that brand, perhaps by showing people in professional settings and engaged in appropriate business activities. Using pictures from the company picnic or other more informal situations would detract from the overall brand of professionalism that you want your website to paint for you.

A second goal is to make use of good quality images that highlight your business, products or services. You can acquire "stock" images from various online services. The wide selection of photos available from these sources may allow you to find images that perfectly complement your website and image. However, you take a risk that people are able to recognize that these are standard images and may take that into account when viewing your website.

If you use images from these services, be very careful in your selection. Be sure that the images you choose really reflect your business and the brand you are building with your website. Ensure critically that the pictures have not been chosen simply because they are eyecatching or cool.

A third consideration is to use pictures of your business, office, employees or customers. If you take this route, the images should be of professional quality and should not look posed. You may also need releases from any people shown in the pictures before you can post them on the web.

As a general rule of thumb, be careful that the quantity and quality of the images selected are not so distracting that they interfere with the overall message of your website. Remember that the text of your website-in text and menu selections-is the element that allows people to find what they are looking for on your website and determine if you can meet their needs. The images expand on that and show what you offer and who you are.
